Antique Car Radio Restorations
Pictured to the right is a typical Antique Car Radio. It has 8 tubes in it. It also has 20 capacitors (16 paper + 4 electrolytic). Some car radios have more than this, some less.
These pictures are of a restored radio.
There are two ways I determine the price of a restoration, and both are based on the number of paper and electrolytic capacitors need to be replaced.
In most cases, after replacing the paper and electrolytic capacitors, and vibrator, a car radio will operate like new or better.
Occasionally, I receive a radio that is in need of more parts, or work to get it working like new or better.
If, for example this car radio, needs capacitors and vibrator, I will charge 20 x $15 = $300 + $60.00 for a new solid state vibrator, or $360.00*. I call this “$15 per”. That is $15.00 per capacitor replaced + other parts. The $15.00 per capacitor covers the capacitors and all labor on a car radio. Any additional parts cost extra but labor stays the same.
If it, needs other parts making “$15 per” price exceed $20 per capacitor replaced, (or 20 x $20.00 = $400.00* in this example), this will be the flat-rate price for the restoration.
